No Ceilings 5: Get to Know Boogie, Jazz Cartier, DonMonique, IshDARR, and Salomon Faye

1.

For our last No Ceilings show in New York, we went rap-free, but on July 8, the hip-hop will be in full force. We're especially excited about this one because we're finally bringing Long Beach/Compton rapper Boogie to the East Coast, and the timing is perfect. We've been fans ever since 2014's Thirst 48 mixtape, but with "Oh My" taking off and his The Reach mixtape in heavy rotation, this is his time.

On top of that, we've got Jazz Cartier, one of our favorite new artists with one of the best albums of the year, and three other rising talents—IshDARR, DonMonique, and Salomon Faye—who each come with a unique skill set and make for a wildly eclectic show, even with an all hip-hop lineup. Click through the slides to get to know each of the artists on the lineup.

You can buy tickets here, RSVP here, and we'll see you in Brooklyn.

4. Jazz Cartier

As Toronto rap continues to find its feet in a world, Jazz Cartier has kept his head down and churned out some gold. It's old news by now, but he put out one of the albums of the year with Marauding in Paradise.

But the barking aggression that opens this most recent album doesn't tell the whole story. Cartier is a storyteller, able to paint distorted pictures that leave lasting images in a listener's head: listen to the two-part "Rose Quartz/Like, Crazy" for a vivid account of a good relationship that slowly sours, Annie Hall cross-referenced with "Yellow Submarine," all seen through a gauzy, smoke-filled filter.

Listen all the way back to his early releases, and you'll find that he's always been comfortable on the beat. Cartier has a sixth sense for pace and rhythm, and he's understood a valuable lesson from day one: sometimes the best thing to do is let the beat breathe. Also, his live show is bananas.

8. DonMonique

In 2015, the true test for a new artist isn't getting the listener's attention, but keeping it. Over a relatively short time, DonMonique has done just that. She's been making music for a while, but it wasn't until "Pilates" that she really started generating just the right amount of buzz.

Then, just as she had everyone's ear, she followed that up with "Jada" and "Tha Low," two equally different but just as impressive offerings (one of which features Danny Brown). In doing so, she proved she's capable of sustaining momentum and keeping the level of her music high, making us that much more excited for her upcoming EP and No Ceilings performance.

12. IshDARR

Don't sleep on Milwaukee. It's a bubbling but still underappreciated scene, but new artists like IshDARR, WebsterX, Reggie Bonds, and Mic Kellogg are making their city proud. Of them all, IshDARR may be the most technically gifted. Rapping seems like a natural skill for him, like flicking words off his tongue is intuitive. As for the rest that comes with being an artist, IshDARR is still figuring that out, and that's part of what makes him so exciting to watch evolve. He's trying new things, getting better with each release, and learning how to tell his story.

16. Salomon Faye

Salomon Faye is intense. Most impressively though, he channels that intensity with a calm, deliberate tone. Every word he says is carefully considered, and even when he's clearly frustrated and sick of the bullshit ("Did I Do That?"), he's thoughtful with what he says and how he says it. The young New York rapper isn't latching on to the hot styles or chasing that elusive viral hit—instead, he's slowly but surely building a reputation for being one of the most intelligent new rappers with a lot to get off his chest. That's a combination that makes Salomon Faye a vital new voice in hip-hop.
