From Ann Arbor to Texas, creative minds came together to lay a fresh soundscape beneath the vocals of Kehlani and Chance The Rapper’s “The Way.” Sango, Atu, Dpat, and Asante replace the sensual beat of the initial version, which pushed forward with dozens of small, multi-measure pulses, and instead created a gentler fabric.
An airy, billowing background is the basis for the rework, with melodic samples and reversed instruments popping up from its foundation. The two vocalists once sounded as if they were interacting at home, behind closed doors. Now, the lighter beat somehow holds more weight. Dancing atop hardwood floors transitions to dancing within a crater on the moon.
