10 Artists Redefining What it Means to be a "SoundCloud Producer"

These rising SoundCloud producers will shape the future of pop, R&B, rap, and electronic music.

Pay attention to SoundCloud, and you'll notice that a new movement is happening. It doesn't have a particular style or sound, but it does consist almost entirely of producers. These producers are outgrowing their roots at an ever-increasing pace, landing placements on big albums or campaigns, and creating sounds quite unlike anything else. Artists like Cashmere Cat (credits include Kanye West, Tinashe, Miguel, Ty Dolla $ign), Lido, Baauer, and Ryan Hemsworth, have proved that building a buzz and a dedicated fanbase on SoundCloud can lead to much bigger things. They're redefining what it can mean to be a SoundCloud producer.

Expectations are higher than ever, and it's all thanks to incredibly talented producers outdoing what has come before them. These aren't just producers laying copious hi-hats over a Kanye track or copying Madlib verbatim, these are producers gaining traction because they're making beats more polished or unique than some of the big names in hip-hop and R&B.

SoundCloud is no longer just a place for promotional singles and throwaways, but a home for genuine, exciting talent who will shape the future of rap, pop, R&B, and electronic music. Here are 10 artists redefining what it means to be a "SoundCloud" producer.

1.

2. Poter Elvinger

We still don't have an overabundance of material from Poter Elvinger, but what little we do have gives us hope. Confidently it can be said that Poter is destined for greatness, as long as he releases some more material sometime soon. We've had a few tracks pop up here and there for a few fleeting moments, as well as a Versus Versace campaign accompanied by his music, but we still don't have an EP or an album. He promises that it's coming, though, and we're eagerly awaiting its arrival.

4. Blank Body

There are plenty of ways to describe Blank Body's sound, but it's perhaps mind-blowing that's the most appropriate descriptor. Vibrant in all the ways that count, the artist formerly known as Bine is capable of producing some of the most monolithic bangers around. His beats tower above countless big-name producers, making it a wonder why more people haven't taken note already. Maybe he's too ahead of the curve, or maybe he's just scaring everyone off with how good he is.

Whatever the reason, if everyone isn't talking about his music by the end of the year, then our planet might just be fucked after all. Check out his recently released album, EXPLICIT DELUXE, here.

6. Eric Dingus

Austin's Eric Dingus has been producing music since 2012, but it wasn't until this year that he was given the platform he truly deserves. In 2012 he released an underlooked album titled Ethereal Depression (even now, none of the tracks on the album have over 500 listens),  and now he's landed a spot on one of 2015's biggest releases so far. Going from sub-500 plays to a spot on Drake's latest is a pretty big jump, but it's a natural progression no less.

His production on Drake's "Now & Forever" was characteristic of his signature style, and yet it suited Drake's emotional rap-crooning perfectly. He's one of SoundCloud's biggest success stories of 2015, but he's far from done yet. Whether producing solo material or working with frequent collaborators Dowrong and Bishop Light, Eric has proved himself as a versatile and unique producer.

8. Dylan Brady

Dylan Brady blew us away with his debut album, All I Ever Wanted, and he's been impressing us ever since, too. His whirly combination of outsider hip-hop and eskewed pop music comes together to form a peculiar sound that's as Yung Lean as it is The Knife. He's not content just producing for himself, though, as he's just as adept when it comes to working with others, especially when he joins forces with Night Lovell for some particularly fierce tracks.

The way he can take the reigns and provide both fantastic beats and infectious vocals is incredibly impressive, making him not only a producer worthy of huge success, but a fully-formed artist, too. Besides, who else can do a Taylor Swift cover one moment and then produce a rugged Death Grips meets Bon Iver style track the next without it seeming out of character?

10. hnrk

As far as those currently pushing SoundCloud's most recent wave of artists go, hnrk is something of an originator. Working with a melancholic, spectral sound that he's slowly been perfecting ever since 2012 or so, hnrk possesses a style many have since tried to emulate, but it's clear that very few can even come close to real deal. Having collaborated with SoundCloud royalty Corbin and Bones numerous times, it's clear that hnrk not only excels on his own, but in the presence of others, too.

12. Ekali

We first became familiar with Vancouver's Ekali, part of the international Flow-Fi collective, through his brilliant remixes of Tinashe and Dpat, but in the past year he has proven to be an incredibly talented producer on all levels, whether flipping R&B and rap or delivering his own bass-heavy but beautiful original tracks.

Ekali has leveraged his Soundcloud success into a slot as a participant at Red Bull Music Academy 2014 in Tokyo, not to mention being heavily sampled on "Preach" from Drake's If You're Reading This It's Too Late. Most recently, Sonny Digital used Ekali and Gravez' remix of "Good" to soundtrack his music video, and with rap production heavyweights like that paying attention, we wouldn't be surprised to see Ekali working with some big names in the bear future.

14. Nok from the Future

With his name suitably hinting at his far-flung sounds, Nok from the Future hasn't just adopted an internet friendly aesthetic, he's pretty much become the internet. From his bizarre masked videos to his surreal space-age sounds, Nok has taken the internet age idea of what hip-hop can really be and pushed it towards its logical breaking point. Considering himself a producer first and foremost, Nok's production is otherworldly, vibrant, and quite unlike anything else. He combines the surreal with the accessible in a way few producers today are capable of.

16. Misogi

Dubai-based wunderkind Misogi has been wowing us with his widescreen sound for quite a while now, but it seems that he's hellbent on furthering his talents and pushing himself even further. His latest release, PINK2was his most polished yet, showcasing the breadth of his considerable abilities. His production style sounds ready for the big screen, and the big artists. Considering how fast he's outgrowing his SoundCloud roots, it won't be long until names we hear every other day are working with him.

17. Drip-133

Currently sitting at the forefront of SoundCloud's most exciting new wave, Drip-133 has crafted an aesthetic entirely his own with both his collaborative work and his solo output. His instrumentals blend sounds grotty with sounds uplifting, always carrying a hefty bass that's now become a signature of his. The little swirling melodies that float above his finely crafted beat-patterns linger long after first listen, and his work really shines when he pairs his sounds with a vocalist.

19. Klimeks

UK-based producer Klimeks has been on our radar since the beginning of the year, but he's been producing for the likes of Bones since 2013. Things really heated up for the producer around May time, when he landed a production credit of his landing on A$AP Rocky's long-awaited second studio album, At. Long. Last. A$AP. "Canal St." may stand as his biggest success to date, but there's a lot more to him than just that.

From the ethereal midnight train ride that is the Nightglide EP to his stellar work with the like-minded hnrk, Klimeks has built up a killer catalogue of tar-black soundscapes in the past year. He's not as prolific as some of SoundCloud's cult favorites, but he's no less talented.
