The Ultimate Make Out Session Soundtrack

1.

Making out is one of the best things humans ever decided to do, but also one of the trickiest to navigate. There are so many factors to consider and one small misstep can completely ruin the mood. And as everyone knows, once the moment is gone, it's gone.

So while you ponder the most flattering lighting and brush your teeth again, or maybe more realistically, as you psych yourself up in the shared taxi ride home, have one less thing to worry about and let us take care of the music. Click through for 15 of the best songs to get down to, ranging from smooth R&B to mood-setting indie tracks.

Together the songs come to just over an hour so take your time and enjoy yourself.

3. The Weeknd - "What You Need"

Most of the artists on this list are known for their sexy tracks, but The Weeknd is the absolute epitome. His incredible debut mixtape House of Balloons is tailor-made for drug-taking and sex-having (feel free to listen to it on the bus to work though—do you.)

While any of Abel's tracks are worthy of the bedroom (he could have monopolized this entire list if we were trolls, not pigeons), we kept it to one and chose "What You Need." Sink into the wave, bounce to the hook, and convince your partner that you're what they need.

5. Inc - "The Place"

If you're looking for a track to get things hot and heavy, this isn't it. “The Place” is for tender moments, soft kisses, and taking your time. The production on this track is almost too smooth, and combined with the Aged brothers' breathy lyrics, the song creates a sense of familiarity and vulnerability. So whether you're with a new partner or you've been round before, you'll be staring into each others eyes with this one.

6. Jeremih ft. Shlohmo - "Fuck You All The Time"

Both Jeremih and Shlohmo's music is steamy on its own, but when they joined forces, these two made tracks so hot it's straight-up dangerous. On “Fuck You All The Time”, Shlohmo's beats combined with Natasha Mosley's distorted voice and Jeremih's deep bass notes takes an already overtly sexual track and brings it into blissed-out territory.

Also Jeremih's occasional "oohs" is for sure gonna give some feels. Put this on in the morning and if you're feeling it after, let Shlohmo know how good a time you had.

8. Miguel - "Coffee"

While many of these songs are sexy, there's an important distinction between sexy and romantic. Miguel's main focus is the latter, that sweet post-coital stuff; pillow talk, sleeping over, and coffee in the morning. If that sounds too cheesy to get the makeout vibes going, watch the video—it will provide some inspiration, as well as some serious relationship goals. Put this on with your future bae and hopefully get yourself some coffee too. Just don't start using "gunplay" as a metaphor for sex, please. Only Miguel's drawl can make that work.

9. James Blake - "The Wilhelm Scream"

It's funny how sometimes sad songs pull double duty as makeout songs. That's not saying that making out is sad—it's obviously great, but there's definitely something about the mellow smoothness of “The Wilhelm Scream” that lends itself to both sexy time and cry time.

This song starts off with the smoothest beat which then builds into intensity before breaking down again. Get lost in James Blake's sweet voice and fall in.

10. The xx - "Shelter"

It doesn't matter how old you are: the nerves of kissing someone new will inevitably recall the angsty days of making out surrounded by band posters and trying to stay quiet so you don't wake the parents. The world of early relationships is one filled with turmoil, for better or worse.

The xx combine pleading, obsessive lyrics with thrumming, atmospheric guitar and soft vocals in “Shelter,” perfectly capturing the intensity and uncertainty of these emotions. Listen to this and try not get too deep into the makeout nostalgia.

12. Drake - "Hold On We're Going Home"

Drake knows how to do good slow jam and "Hold On We're Going Home" is pretty much perfect. This is for those makeouts that start in the club and continue in the bedroom. Start whispering this in your girl's ear in the at the bar and put the full thing on when you're back. Even without seeing Drake be all Miami Vice in the video, hearing him croon the word “endlessly” is sure to get you both there.

Obviously this song failed for the Starbucks Drake Hands guy, but trust, it won't for you.

14. Frank Ocean - "Thinkin' Bout You"

Frank Ocean's music is rooted in romance in all its forms: the good, the bad, the sensual, the self-destructive, and the obsessive. This, perhaps the greatest song on his magnum opus Channel Orange, is a laundry list of doe-eyed nonsense and endearing self-doubt. There's no way to know whether or not your partner is "thinkin' bout forever," but they definitely won't be thinking about leaving once Frank's falsetto kicks in.

16. Ciara - "Body Party"

There's been a lot of talk about Ciara's sex life recently but whatever people are saying about that, her songs are always fire and this one in particular is steamy. “Body Party” is slow and sexy but has just enough bounce that you could dance to it, too.

Think about skipping watching the video though, while it is undeniably hot, Future's appearance in it is just kinda sad and may make you think about the tenuous nature of romantic relationships, hardly ideal pre-makeout thoughts. So ignore the video, do a little dance for your boo and get excited.

18. The Cure - "Just Like Heaven"

Ah, The Cure. If this blog post was being written in 1988, every song on this list would have belonged to Robert Smith. Then again, blogs didn't exist in 1988 and they weren't putting playlists in the paper (remember newspapers lol).

Still, The Cure's music has aged remarkably well, considering how hopelessly lovestruck the band was. "Just Like Heaven" wears its heart on its sleeve, euphoric and desperate all at once. No one is immune to its charms—for best results, start by dancing with your romantic interest. If you're not swapping spit by the chorus, you're doing it wrong.

20. A$AP Rocky- "L$D"

Despite being a self proclaimed “pretty mother fucker,” A$AP Rocky's tracks are usually more fitting for a club than for the bedroom—but "L$D" is an obvious exception. A$AP's singing voice is slow, hazy and surprisingly romantic. This track is for those light-headed makeout sessions when you forget to come up for air.

This is also one of the best videos put out in a while so if you're feeling it, use "L$D" as both visuals and soundtrack to your woozy, wavy kisses.

22. Massive Attack - "Paradise Circus"

This song might be a bit darker than some of the lush, smoochy instrumentation on this rest of this list, but there's something so sonically seductive about "Paradise Circus," with its breathy, hushed vocals and snappy percussion. Plus, you can't ignore those lyrics: "Love is like a sin, my love for the one that feels it the most."

24. Lykke Li - "Little Bit"

On first listen this track is so upbeat and almost sugary, but if you go deeper there are some really intimate and sensual lyrics in there, making it the perfect makeout companion.

The love is pretty explicit in this song, so don't play this after a first date. If you're coupled up though, put this on and cuddle up with bae.

26. FKA Twigs - "Papi Pacify"

Before FKA twigs was the gracing magazine covers and selling out warehouses, she was turning heads with a series of experimental and arresting music videos that were alarmingly sexy. "Papi Pacify" is a slow-burner, ethereal synths and hiccuping production setting the mood from the very start. Tahliah exhales the lyrics with a tender, kittenish touch—but it's an evil kitten, and the song's rough edges swing the vibe from moody to raunchy. Couldn't hurt to have this video playing while the song plays, either.

28. D'Angelo - "Really Love"

When D'Angelo broke his too-long silence with Black Messiah, the expectations were astronomical. He still managed to surpass expectations, and "Really Love" is one of the major reasons why. Simultaneously orchestral and straightforward, the six-minute epic starts with a flamenco guitar to set the mood before inviting a walking bass and harp into the proceedings. It's one of the smoothest releases of the year, and D'Angelo's cooing falsetto slides into the beat with the deft touch of a man who knows exactly what he's doing—in this case, soundtracking the final descent of a romantic tryst. The eagle has landed.
