We first encountered Los Angeles-born rapper Duckwrth through his mixtape TAXFREEE Vol. 1 and, in particular, standout single “…Travel.” Channeling California greats The Pharcyde with his knowing wit, Duckwrth managed to escape the trap of nostalgia and entertain with his sharply descriptive lyrics.

“Lambo,” his latest collaboration with The KickDrums and the third single from their upcoming joint project Nowhere, enjoyably expands Duckwrth’s sound, a crossroads of hip-hop and R&B that recalls the retro-futurism of Gnarls Barkley. “Lambo” hearkens back to “…Travel” briefly in terms of content—”So I cruise down Crenshaw Blvd next to Church’s Chicken/Posted in the parking lot I see/A mothership, candy paint with the gold spokes/I think I must have found myself a queen,” he sings on the second verse, recalling his previous single’s ” tale of a young Duckwrth traveling back in time to ride down Crenshaw Blvd.” It’s a sonic gumbo that highlights Duckwrth’s diverse tastes and talents.

If you’re in New York on Wednesday, June 17th, you can catch Duckwrth and The KickDrums performing Nowhere in its entirety at Webster Hall.
