This type of performance has an unrestrained, uncontrollable energy to it. It can happen anywhere, whether in a random California park, a boxing ring, or even a record store. The fans are right next to the performers, and they even have the ability to impact and guide the show by either clapping up each punchline, or shouting down the verbal downers.
Of course, the battle rap style isn’t limited to one-on-one showdowns. At Eminem concerts (a noted former battle rapper), you get the feeling from his incredible intensity that he’s picturing the face of every detractor he’s ever had, as if Timothy White, a writer who criticized Eminem for his lyrics, were right there on stage with him. It’s no coincidence that former Shady Records label mate Obie Trice also has a battle rap past, and this is reflected in his downright confrontational live shows as well.
