Canada’s been killing it. No, we’re not talking about Drake… although he’s had a solid year, so far. When you look at the electronic music scene in Canada, it’s definitely thriving. No, we’re not talking about Kaytranada either, but he’s also a problem. No, this is about Pomo, a producer from Montreal (by way of Port Moody, BC) who has been on a roll over the last few years.
Like Kaytranada (and Ta-ku), Pomo’s a part of the growing HW&W roster, a collective that shares a love for fire beats of all types; they know how to craft the more downtempo, emotional bae vibes that you can turn down to, but have no problem flexing their skills into different, more uptempo regions. When a producer credits J Dilla, Disclosure, and Prince as influences, you’d be crazy for not lending your ear.
For Pomo’s next trick—after nailing remixes for Snakehips and Bondax, as well as dropping a glorious debut EP in November of 2014—he brought the funk to Alina Baraz and Galimatias’ “Fantasy.” The original could’ve been produced by Pomo, with it’s sultry vocals and chilled bop, but the producer brought the bright synths out to jam. His take on “Fantasy” is, to put it simply, the jam.
Pomo says that he was “super excited” when Galimatias asked to remix one of the tracks from their forthcoming Urban Flora EP, as he’s been a fan for some time. “Alina’s vocal is so smooth,” Pomo continues, “and just super inspiring to remix.” The vocals don’t lose their sex appeal, they’re just lifted from pillowtime whispers to shared glances while waists wind on the dancefloor.
Again, to put it simply, Pomo’s on it.
“Fantasy” is taken from Alina Baraz and Galimatias’ Urban Flora, which will be released via Ultra on May 19.
