Panda Bear’s single “Tropic of Cancer” is a beautiful track in its own right. The lead harp in the instrumentation combined with the soft vocals provided by Panda Bear—aka Noah Lennox—make for an instantly calming track. It would be difficult to image the pairing visuals to be anything ventured too far from that same feeling.
“Tropic of Cancer” already gives off the sound as if you were floating through the clouds or dreaming. The visuals directed by Animal Collective member Dave Portner are equally dreamlike. But it comes off more like one of those dreams that no matter how many times you explain it, it remains difficult to understand. If even you don’t know what’s going on, it makes you want to watch it over and over again.
However, Portner had this to say about the video:
It’s always been in the spirit of Animal Collective to want to collaborate in many artistic ways with each other. Having been a fan of Noah’s music since we were teenagers, it’s sweet to finally be able to collaborate with him on something other than just making sounds and songs.
I also am thankful to get my first shot at making something a little more long running in the visual/video world. This is one of my favorite songs on the record, hence my being involved with it. I’m grateful and excited to have worked on every moment of it and to have worked with all the sweet people who helped me put it together.
