13 Songs That Could Be 2015's Summer Anthem

These are the future hits and the sleeper hits that could be everywhere come summer.

By Confusion, Constant Gardner, Graham, and Adrienne Black

Every year, a couple of songs emerge from the thaw as omnipresent anthems for the warmer months. In summers past, you couldn't step outside without hearing Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" or Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" or Kanye and Jay Z's "N****s In Paris."

These songs have an unfair advantage, because they'll always be associated with warm weather and good times. When the perfect summer song creeps its way into your life, it stays there forever, attached to that memory of summer, whatever year. It's hard to even think about particular summers of your life without a certain song popping into your head.

This year, there's another strong crop of hopefuls. From Post Malone's quirky potential hit to Shura's retro pop and Vic Mensa's new anthem, here are 13 songs that could emerge as 2015's summer anthem.

2. D.R.A.M. - "Cha Cha"

Considering that it came out in 2014, it's amazing that "Cha Cha" hasn't peaked yet, but it hasn't—it's clearly still rising. Virginia rapper/singer/producer D.R.A.M. has been co-signed by Chance The Rapper, GoldLink, and Snoop Dogg, and everyone who hears "Cha Cha" seems to feel the urge to share it. Hopefully we'll get a remix soon, because summer 2015 feels like the perfect time for this song to completely blow up.

4. Boogie - "Oh My"

We got familiar with Boogie through the Thirst 48 mixtape, which was full of laid-back beats, and dense but self-deprecating bars about real street life in L.A.. So, a track with production from Jahlil Beats (the man behind bangers like "Hot N*gga" and Meek Mill's "Burn") was not necessarily what we expected next, but Boogie pulls it off well. "Oh My" has an instantly catchy hook that is perfect for drunken shout-alongs—if you don't to get turnt to this song at least a few times this summer, you're probably doing something wrong.

6. Jamie xx ft. Romy - "Loud Places"

"Loud Places" is one of the brightest, most upbeat songs Jamie xx and Romy have ever worked on, and it's still tinged with melancholy and a sense of nostalgia. Regardless, when the slowly building production breaks into that Idris Muhammed sample and those hand claps "Loud Places" is truly uplifting. There might be tears streaming down your face, but your arms will be raised to the heavens as, "I have never reached such heights," echoes around your empty room. Anthemic.

8. Post Malone - "White Iverson"

Post Malone came out of nowhere with "White Iverson," but it immediately placed the LA-based artist on the top of many artists-to-watch lists (including ours). The song has almost 2.5 million plays on SoundCloud now, but outside of those in-the-know, Post Malone is still a big question mark. Since "White Iverson," Post has released a couple of strong follow-ups ("Tear$" and "Too Young") but if he does take off in the mainstream, it seems only right that "White Iverson" is the song that does it for him. Maybe we'll get a Drake remix?

10. Shura - "2Shy"

Shura's wavy, melting synth vibes would have been comfortable in the '80s, but her sound is exploding in the '10s. There's a restrained melancholy floating just underneath all the bells and whistles on "2Shy," one that's most evident in her vocals: it sounds like she's singing with her mouth covered, embarrassed of revealing the unadulterated power of her voice.

In any event, Shura has turned in a fantastic track that's equal parts Dev Hynes and Sky Ferreira. It's Shura's self-consciousness, however, that elevates "2Shy" above the competition and into the parting clouds as a summer playlist standard.

12. Skepta - "Shutdown"

The right co-signs will only get you so far. Of course, Skepta's body of work proves that he's so much more than a few big-name backers, but still, "Shutdown" was dropped at the perfect time—just a few days after Kanye shouted Skepta out at the BRITs. It's now been out long enough for the bouncy beat and big hook to get totally stuck in your head, and as we creep towards summer, the video should connect with anyone who's looking forward to chilling in the ends with the mandem.

14. Vic Mensa ft. Kanye West - "U Mad"

While we await the arrival of So Help Me God, Kanye has kept alternative means of entertainment flowing. From his Time cover to his support of Bruce Jenner, 'Ye has spent 2015 demonstrating how he's able to have the music world clinging to his every world—even if 70% of his energy is devoted fashion.

But let's not forget the ripple effect: the power of a Kanye West co-sign has turned the world on to talents like Allan Kingdom and, less recently, Vic Mensa. Vic started out as Chance the Rapper's partner in crime in the SAVEMONEY crew, but the two have taken different different paths since. Chance is building something of his own with The Social Experiment, while Vic has been scaling the industry ladder two rungs at a time. "U Mad" cemented his status as a big-name artist who can hold his own as the first name on a track. Vic signed to Roc Nation soon after the release of "U Mad," so this might not be the only track of his you'll be bumping this summer.

16. Carly Rae Jepsen - "All That"

"Call Me Maybe" dominated 2012—not just the summer, the entire year. Musically, Carly Rae Jepsen has matured since then. "All That" was written and produced with help from Dev Hynes and Ariel Rechtshaid, and while it's a little less bubbly, upbeat, and obvious than what Jepsen is known for, it's just as catchy. With a slowed down, retro vibe and an unforgettable chorus, we wouldn't mind hearing "All That" all summer.

18. Baauer ft. Fetty Wap & Dubbel Dutch - "Promises"

I'll admit it, I had Fetty Wap written off as a one-hit wonder the second "Trap Queen" started to bulldoze radio like it was an Amazonian rainforest. Consider the words eaten: "Promises" is an earworm of the highest caliber, and the New Jersey rapper holds up his end of the Baauer/Dubbel Dutch-produced track with aplomb.

“I knew as soon as I heard the beat,” Fetty Wap said. “Everybody gonna turn up with me.” He's right—I might not understand half the words he's saying, but I'm gonna flail around like Cookie Monster in a moment of weakness every time "Promises" comes on.

21. Turls - "My Plug"

Listener be warned: one listen to Turls' "My Plug" will leave it tattooed in your ears for a long, long time. When Tanners first posted about the song as part of his 5 On It series, "My Plug" was the last song to appear, buried nonchalantly at the bottom of the page, with nothing to indicate the deviously addictive chorus. Ever since that first listen, "my pluuuuuuuuuuuug" has been bouncing off my skull's walls like Flubber.

With a little more traction, "My Plug" could start making exponential gains by summertime. It's the perfect laid back, hazy beat (provided by SenseiATL) that oozes summer vibes.

23. Rae Sremmurd ft. Nicki Minaj & Young Thug - "Throw Some Mo"

There's no denying that Rae Sremmurd knows how to make a party hit. In fact, that's pretty much become their specialty. Last summer they took over the air waves with "No Flex Zone," and many assumed it would be their only hit. But here we are a year later, and they now have a list of hits under their belt—including their latest Mike Will Made It-produced single "Throw Some Mo'" featuring Nicki Minaj and Young Thug, which is already on its way to being one of this summer's major anthems.

Summer anthems usually seem simple on the surface, but that's hardly ever the case. There needs to be a catchy hook, an infectious beat, maybe a hot feature, and most importantly the track needs to be something that can instantly get a party started. Rarely does a song fulfill all of these requirements. However, "Throw Some Mo'" hits all of them right on the head. Although this song came out months ago, it doesn't seem like it's going away any time soon.

25. COMPNY - "Lovers"

Remember Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” and its slow rise to the top? It was a song for the summer, and it felt like it never really peaked until the weather started getting warmer and the days started getting longer. South London band COMPNY’s new song “Lovers” feels like it has the same potential. In New York City, winter is slowly beginning to fade, and songs like “Lovers” help remind us what’s coming next. When it finally arrives, we’ll have the soundtrack.

27. Drake - "Energy"

Even if Drake's "real" album drops this summer, "Energy" will remain one of the perfect tracks for a sweltering day on the boat, in the backyard, or at the beach. Drizzy always knows how to stack his beats: his voice is in the upper register, so he makes sure his production has a lot of power on the low end.

"Energy" is case in point, as a simple piano sample gets boosted by some growling, murky bass as Drake counts his enemies. The result is one of the 6 God's most quotable tracks to date, and it's not going away anytime soon.
