Saturday Submissions

We still haven't figured out exactly how to deal with submissions. Pigeons & Planes was founded on the idea of providing a balance—of genres, of jokes and serious content, and most important, of indie and mainstream.

As the site continues to grow, we get more submissions than we can handle, but we think it's important to go through as many as we can. That's what we're here for, and that's sometimes how we find our favorite new artists, like this guy last week. We see so many other sites relying on record labels and PR companies for their music, and we think that gives an unfair advantage to people with money and connections.

So we'll always be open to taking submissions, and we decided to try out this Saturday Submissions feature to share some of what we find. Here are five random submissions that we got recently.

1.

2. This clickbait line-crosser

Ugh. This is positive reinforcement for negative behavior, isn't it? Note to artists: this is NOT the move. It may get you some attention at first, but it's also obnoxious, offensive, and nobody has ever started a sentence with, "Yeah, our new superstar, found them in an email talking about how they are a 10-year-old paraplegic. Turns out they aren't at all! Turns out they are a superstar!"

3. This Kanye/MJ mash-up

Damn, did that rare, unreleased Kanye West and Michael Jackson joint just hit our submissions inbox?! I went into this with pretty low expectations because mash-ups are usually terrible, but this isn't terrible. Sure, it's a little rough around the edges, but it's an interesting idea. Props Soundcloud user kidfromthe6ix.

4. Hello Elise...

Pretty sure there's no Elise at P&P. We do like "wierd music" though, just not this type of "wierd music."

5. The threat

We don't take kindly to threats but this is actually pretty good. The glistening guitar lines and gentle vocals make us feel like it's summer again and you can even grab a free download of the track here.

6. The quirky Canadian

Honest, thoughtful, and comes with a bit of a backstory—this is a solid submission, and the music is pretty interesting. The Tallest Man On Earth comparison is easy to hear, but I'm not sure that this backing band adds anything particularly unique to a voice that deserves something different. It feels a little busy and high school band-ish.
