Video: Petite Noir - "Chess"

When we first posted about Petite Noir, the South African baritone distinguished himself with a huge range of influences that all managed to fit into his music.

Petite Noir has continued to widen the net with his latest offering, “Chess.” It sounds like he’s studied up on LCD Soundsystem, TV on the Radio, and Willis Earl Beal since joining forces with Saint Heron last year, and the result is a journey nearly six minutes long that has vocalist Yannick Iluga exploring falsetto and basso alike.

“Chess” is a part of “The King of Anxiety,” the debut EP from Petite Noir due for release in January. The video (directed by Cieron Magat) is a hodgepodge of bright colors, public-access animation, and epic poses by Iluga. Stream above.
