Earlier this year, Tobias Jesso Jr. announced a subscription bundle, where the incredibly low price of $5 got you a new song, pressed onto colored 7″ flexi disc, delivered to you about once a month. Included were the songs that first took our breath away, the stunning piano ballads “Just A Dream” and “True Love,” and most recently, a song called “Hollywood.”
Produced by Chet JR White, formerly of Girls, “Hollywood” cements Tobias’ place as one of the best songwriters working right now. He makes it seem so easy—backed for the most part by simple piano, delivering direct lyrics, and never extending his voice above a low murmur—and the resulting song is as impactful and poignant as anything we’ve heard all year. “Hollywood” is the first single from Tobias’ debut album, and has a bit more of a studio polish than the lo-fi demos we’ve heard previously, especially with that sweeping brass section that the song ends with.
