The Best New Mixes Streaming Right Now

By Moses Jazz Wiener

The ability to demonstrate eclecticism plays an important role in creating this list. Not only in the case of our selection process—deciding what qualifies (or disqualifies) a certain mix to be included—but also when it comes to the content of the mix itself. By definition, "eclecticism" is the derivation of ideas, style, and/or taste from a broad range of sources, and whilst it’s important for us to give you a variety of mixes from a variety of genres, it is equally as important for each individual selection to have its own distinguished character. Diversity is key.

With that said, we’ve got some good ‘uns for you this time round. That cool kid Kaytranada coughed up a cover CD featuring a bunch of previously unheard jams; Jackmaster goes deep on a two-hour journey of house and techno; heat emanates from the Boiler Room crew with the introduction of a new mix series; plus various denominations and incarnations of pop, hip-hop, grime and more feature. It’s hectic, it’s eclectic, and at points electric.

These are the best new mixes streaming on the internet right now.

1.

2. Jacques Greene: Fact Mix 467

This most excellent mix from Jacques Greene was only a few hours off the deadline for the last Best Mixes installment, and so here it is at the top of the pile this time round.

Coinciding with the release of his latest EP, After Life, After Party, which includes the excellent "1 4 Me," the baller from Montreal also includes tracks from the likes of Dorian Concept, Lukid... and a graduation speech from Sean Combs?!

Sure, why not. Listen to mix number 467 in Fact Magazine's continually impressive series below.

3. Kaytranada: Mixmag Cover CD Mix

Can Kaytranada do any wrong at this point?

Also repping Montreal to the fullest, the poster boy for easy-to-dance-to electronica recently made the cover of this month's Mixmag, and in turn produced a 40 minute mix comprised entirely of his own productions, remixes and edits. It wasn't even that long ago Kaytranada (real name Kevin Celestin) dropped a free album of random goodies he had accumulated on his hard drive over the years, and if this is the quality of the stuff he's releasing for free, you had best believe we're salivating at the prospect of his forthcoming release via XL Recordings.

4. CFCF: Night Bus 3

The night bus can be a strange place sometimes. But by the same token, it can be a thoroughly fun journey. Falling somewhere between the two is the third installment of CFCF's "Night Bus" mix series, which rides a sleepy route of reworked hip-hop, experimental excursions, and warped electronic bootlegs—namely the Burial/Mariah Carey mash-up. I mean, credit where credit's due. Also included are tracks by DJ Rashad, Bjork, Arca, and of course remixes from CFCF himself.

And wouldn't you know it, CFCF is also from Montreal. What's in the water there, guys?

5. Ta-ku: Drive Slow, Homie Pt. IV

The return of the DSH series has arrived. Nothing's changed. Still all about those songs that make you want to circle the block a few more times before getting out.—Ta-ku

So lock the door and continue to cruise with Australia's ambassador of all things funky and fresh. Largely a hip-hop affair, Ta-ku's latest installment is nearly as essential for your car as having a emergency jack for your tyres or jump leads for your battery. Well, maybe not. Having a tyre jack isn't really that important. Having a good selection of songs for your car is. Don't even think about it. Hit download, and take it to the road.

6. Drippin: Opening Ceremony Mix

This mix is drippy, mane.

With his debut EP on the emergent, NY-based Lit City Trax due for general release in a couple of days, why not get yourself acquainted with the Norweigian producer? Drippin, having already earned support from the likes of Diplo, Evian Christ, and Fatima Al Quadiri, throws down a tasty selection of dancefloor decimators, with at least twice your recommended daily allowance of 808 bass. Featuring tracks from contemporaries like Visionist, Future Brown, and Masacooramaan, make sure you're sippin' whilst playing Drippin.

7. Visionist: Grime Mix for Dazed

It truly seems to be grime season over at Dazed HQ at the moment as they lead-up to the latest installment of the magazine's Music Nation series on Channel 4. In it, they approached the originators who fuelled the growth of now-cherished subgenres of urban music to retell the events and the developements that led them to the point they're at now. Wiley, Skepta, Tempa T, Dizzee Rascal, and a whole load more feature in the latest episode on the birth of grime, streamable (in the UK only, unfortunately) here.

As for the mix at hand however, rising British talent Visionist has dug into the depths of his library to put together a mix which raises a lighter to the sort of grime which helped play a formative role in his own sound, but also the sound of London's streets.

Bonus: Mumdance and Logos also put together a grime-heavy mix for Dazed, though this one focusing on the more atmospheric side. Listen to the "weightless mix" here.

8. Rome Fortune: SSense Mix

This year saw the release of Rome Fortune's Small VVorld album (which, by the way, has one of the best covers of the year) and more recently he put together this mix for SSense.

Featuring tracks from the man himself, the mix is one which your subwoofers will love but your neighbours will probably loathe. Also included is a rambunctious range of music from people like Actress, Gucci Mane, Active Child, Three Six Mafia and more.

9. Jackmaster: XLR8R Podcast 366

10. Rabit: Boiler Room Upfront 001

Known best for being the premiere visual outlet for DJs and producers, you would actually be better off closing your eyes for the new audio-only mix series from the Boiler Room crew.

Hopefully an indication of the quality to come, the Upfront series has been introduced with the following statement: "The first in a new audio mix series where we call upon the most interesting artists/DJs/record labels and ask them to peer into the near future. How they take it from there is entirely open to interpretation. Texan grime producer Rabit kicks us off, venturing down a wormhole of warped instrumentals and dark electronic wares."

Rabit himself explained, "with every mix I’ve been doing lately, I try and reframe some of the music I love in order to give context to the world I’m creating with my own work...Common threads, feelings and things that are indefinable. Colours and strokes, a jagged stab. The underdog. That’s what interests me."

Fair to say it interests us too, lose yourself in the mix below.

11. Maximus MMC: First Ear Guest Mix

Hip-hop is where Maximus MMC's heart is.

The Parisian producer put together a mix for London-based blog First Ear and it really is perfect for the weekend. Smooth R&B bootlegs, simmering basslines and soulful vocal cuts from the blogosphere's brightest; all colliding with delightful results. It's a free download as well. Enjoy!
