Prince tried social media, but it looks like that’s all pretty much over. The Artist has deleted his Twitter and Facebook accounts and he’s taken nearly all of his music off his YouTube account. No reason was given for these actions, according to NME, but this only adds fuel to the ongoing debate about musicians and online streaming services like YouTube and Spotify.
Prince joined Facebook just months ago and immediately began trolling. He hosted a Q&A session with fans and only answered one question. In fact, he didn’t even really answer the question himself. He just provided a link to explain his perspective on sound frequencies.
Prince has been pessimistic about the Internet for years. In a 2010 Mirror interview, the singer explained his take on the web. “The Internet’s completely over,” he said. “I don’t see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won’t pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can’t get it. The Internet’s like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good.” But Prince has a tendency to surprise fans, so we’ll wait and see what happens here.
