There’s been a heinous rumor going around that chillwave died for good, and that’s simply not true. Chillwave evolved, and in the process those clinging to the genre in hopes of recognition died off, in some sort of survival of the fittest situation. Still floating around in various places on the internet and IRL, it’s one of the few internet-born genres with legs, even if it was a little oversaturated at its birth.

Mirror Kisses would probably wince at the thought of someone calling his music chillwave, but there’s no doubt his music carries the same undeniably charming lo-fi shimmer that the genre did at its inception. Even if it doesn’t follow every arbitrary rule, “Innocence” and “Bleed” are both capable of replicating the same type of faux-nostalgic joy as the best of Washed Out’s discography.

Both forward-thinking and backward-reflecting, he’s developed a theatrical style indebted to one of the internet’s most fondly remembered fads, whilst making it evident that he’s very much his own artist. Think of it as more lo-fi synth-goth-pop with a smirk on the side. Listen to the recently released “Innocence” below, and check out the brilliant “Bleed” below that.
