The Best New Mixes Streaming Right Now

By Moses Jazz Wiener

A mix doesn't have to be mixed perfectly for it to be perfect.

I'm not sure about you, but given the choice between a mix which says something about the person mixing it—complete with mistakes and blemishes—as apposed to their ability to regurgitate the Beatport top 40 or to beatmatch, I'd always opt for the former. It sounds romantic to say, but a mix should be a journey, in addition to sometimes serving as a statement.

Whether it be a mix in honour of hip-hop legend Afrika Bambaataa, an introductory collection of previously unheard tracks from a rising star, or HudMo going in, we try our best to include a little bit of everything. Fasten your seatbelts, because you're in for at least one of those journeys we were just talking about.

1.

2. Cut Chemist: Mix By Jimmy

Cut Chemist paid tribute to a legend on a special mix dedicated to the Afrika Bambaataa's collection of music, put together as part of his Renegades of Rhythm Tour with DJ Shadow—a must for anyone interested in a true originator of hip-hop.

In Cut Chemist's own words:

The mix features recordings Bambaataa had pressed to acetate for spinning live at shows in the late '70s and early '80s. This mix includes entirely unreleased material along with demo versions of hits like 'Looking For The Perfect Beat', 'Renegades of Funk' and 'Planet Rock'.

Now, party people... can y'all get funky?

3. Hudson Mohawke: Chimes Tape

Diplo's residency for BBC Radio 1 keeps coming up with the heat, and this time it's a strictly hip-hop affair. Hudson Mohawke steps up to the plate with a top-drawer mix to coincide with his Chimes EP release on Warp. As a maestro of the craft, expect nothing less than HudMo's signature skull-shaking sounds; sounds which so many in the game attempt (and fail) to imitate.

4. DJ Barely Legal: Rise Up #024

If you're wondering which of these mixes is best played in preparation for (or during) a night out, this is probably the one. Birmingham-born, resident of London DJ Barely Legal shows off her skill set in a sublime mix featuring Destiny's Child, DJ Rashad, garage classics from the likes of Groove Chronicles and So Solid Crew, plus an assortment of other delicious breaks.

5. Damiano von Erckert: In Their House #049

Damiano von Erckert earned his place on this list for his particularly friendly introduction. The German producer invites you into his figurative home in a mix for house label Defected's mix series, wherein DJ's and producers are encouraged to construct a mix with their own personal influences in mind. And if this mix is a direct reflection, one could assume that Damiano von Erckert is just really, really pleasant.

6. Jam City: Earthly III

Jack Latham aka Night Slugs alum Jam City recently shared the third installment of his Earthly mixes on Soundcloud, and this is perhaps the most lucid of the three. The collection of warped, fx-drenched tracks play out like a late night radio station on a shuttle orbiting Nebulon-6; suspended between R&B, ambient soundscapes, and memories of a planet far, far away.

7. Oneman: Solitaire Vol. 3

Another bright light of the UK scene, DJ Oneman also happened to share the third installment of his mix series not long ago: Solitaire Vol. 3. The convergence of jacking house and hip hop plays out nicely over the course of an hour and a half, and if this is the first you're hearing of Oneman, get to know by checking out volume one and two on his Soundcloud.

8. Bobmo: New Dawn Mixtape

French producer Bobmo's New Dawn mixtape is one for anyone that has overlooked the fact they're wearing new shoes and dived into the deep end of the dancfloor at 2AM. 4-to-the-floor house tracks come thick and fast and may result in involuntary body movements.

9. Deadboy: Truancy Volume 102

The latest mix to be offered up by Numbers' Deadboy is described perfectly by its curators, Dutch music blog Truants.

With exclusive tracks from a forthcoming release on Local Action... Clocking in at an hour in length, Truants favourites Moleskin, Sudanim, Throwing Shade, M.E.S.H and Mssingno all feature as well as tracks from Young Thug and Chief Keef.

A varied bundle of fun for everyone, then.

10. Basecamp: Escape Music Festival Mixtape Series Vol. 3

This weekend (October 11 and 12), revelers descended onto New York's Governors Island for Escape Music Festival to see the likes of Moby, Neon Indian, Mayer Hawthorne, and more. Also playing were American electronic outfit Basecamp, and prior to the weekend they put together a dandy little mix fir a series featured on Earmilk.

11. Darkhouse Family: Fabric Is 15 Mix

Now an institution of London clubbing, Fabric celebrate their 15th year in business with a slew of mixes from DJs and producers close to the venue's heart. One, from Welsh production outfit Darkhouse Family, contains a basement-brewed mixture of hard hitting beats guaranteed to make you bump your head.
