It looks like the early bird really does get the worm… or at least gets to hear the newest latest from Kendrick Lamar. Last week, rumors of a new single from Kendrick Lamar—is reportedly taken from his forthcoming sophomore album—would be dropping today. At 7AM on the (K)dot this morning, radio stations and Internets were ablaze with talk of “I,” the Isley Brothers-sampling Rahki-produced track that definitely feels like a more hood version of Pharrell’s “Happy,” for good or ill. There no way you can be sad when hearing that Isley guitar, and with Kendrick reveling in the love he has for himself, “I” ends up being that feel-good, “go get ’em” anthem for those who might be on some depressed shit for whatever reason. Actually, this dropping at 7AM might be a message: maybe you should play this inspirational Kendrick if you’re trying to get your day off on the right foot.

If you want to know more about what Kendrick might be working on for his sophomore album, check out Complex’s cover story. And if you’re looking for the complete opposite of “I,” give Flying Lotus’ Kendrick Lamar-featured “Never Catch Me” (from FlyLo’s You’re Dead) a whirl. Or the good Kid, m.A.A.d city bonus track “Black Boy Fly,” which was also produced by Rahki.
