Over the past few years, the ambient tag has taken on a whole new meaning. Ambient music doesn't have to be beatless, mood-setting, or even quiet.

Although the term “ambient music” may have connotations of being boring or bland to some, artists like Tim Hecker, Oneohtrix Point Never, and even Burial have redefined how to create a sense of ambience. Young UK-based producer Bruised Skies might not take direct influence from all three, but he works within the same adventurous territories.

His rainy, eerily paced music evokes beauty as much as it does longing. It’s a sound that makes you miss something you never had, evoking the emotion it so painstakingly portrays. The enigmatic producer frequently collaborates with other producers, adding extra textural touches that allow the work to flourish more than it would otherwise. Dark, but floral, there’s a sense of awe that frequently crops up in his own gorgeous compositions, as well as his collaborations.

His ethereal, yet grounded sound will immediately appeal to fans of Burial and Brian Eno. It’s the perfect type of music to lose yourself to, immersing yourself in an otherworldly sound unlike anything else. There are influences that are evident, but they’re subverted to create an atmosphere entirely his own.

It’s not hard to see him working with progressively bigger artists over the years, possibly even attracting the attention of electronic giants such as Warp or Hyperdub. It’s not really a question of if, it’s a question of when; and it’s looking more and more likely that his much warranted recognition will come sooner rather than later.
