Following in the wake of a new Kelis album—based almost solely on soul food—and a disturbing video from Darq E Freaker, i-D has provided a platform for the two contrasting artists to successfully coexist. As part of a remix series for Kelis’ album Food, U.K. producer Darq E Freaker tries his hand with the song “Friday Fish Fry”—and the result is far different than one might expect.
Instead of the dark and ominous aesthetic we’ve become accustomed to, the sound is somewhat reserved for the producer’s standards. Despite the addition of a number of sci-fi electronics, the product is a fairly calm track, one that allows Kelis’ looped vocals to flourish while still having the fingerprints of Darq E Freaker all over it.
