Daily Discovery: Deers, Two Girls From Madrid Who Make Perfectly Unrefined Guitar Pop Songs

In the house I grew up in, there was this one wooden table covered in scratches and chips. I knew every scar on that table—most of them were caused by me. I still remember when my mom replaced that table with a new one, and I felt a serious sense of loss. That was my favorite table, and all those blemishes on the surfaces gave it life. It was a table with character.

Deers is a duo from Madrid comprised of Ana Garcia Perrote and Carlotta Cosials. The two songs they’ve released are rickety, messy constructions of vintage guitar pop that sound improperly recorded and never mastered. And they are perfect. You can hear “Bamboo” and “Trippy Gum” in this post and buy them here.

The demos on SoundCloud have a really raw feel. Is the plan to get these mastered for a more polished feel?

We are not planning to record them again. We know it sounds a little messy but we like it! It wasn’t recorded in a studio but in our rehearsal place, fast and furious. We like to think it is all part of the charm of this little demo and we want to keep it that way.

We know it sounds a little messy but we like it!

Are you guys going to stay in Madrid? What’s the music scene like there? I don’t know of too many indie bands from Spain.

We love this city and the people we share life and music with. There are lots of great bands and bars, we just wish there were low cost flights to the US to make the ocean smaller. We are not really planning on staying anywhere. You never know!

What kind of music did you grow up listening to, and what kind of music do you listen to now?

Well, every age has its stage, and we were born in the ’90s… so… well.. Britney Spears. You know what we mean, hahaha. Now seriously, we have been friends for a very long time so we both have been obsessed with tons of bands and ended up falling in love with Mac DeMarco, Ty, Shannon, Black Lips, Dead Ghosts, Devendra, and so many more. We are very loving people you know… haha.

How did you two meet and decide to make music together?

As we just told you, we love to love, so here we go: Ana was the best friend of Carlotta’s ex-boyfriend, who was the best friend of Ana’s ex-boyfriend. We did this trip to the coast in summer some years ago and for no reason we brought two guitars (Carlotta didn’t know how to play even the A chord and Ana stole her uncle’s spanish guitar, by the way. She still keeps it!  hahaha). Our hostel was empty and also the beaches we went to, and I think we still didn’t have internet on our cell phones so we started to play like 14 hours a day, seriously. It was this little great cover of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe.”

We enjoyed it so much that we decided to start a band, and while we were playing at the promenade we bet ourselves we will give a concert before the year finished. Our first concert was the 26th of October of this same year.
