You would never guess from the Western soundtrack-inspired guitars and the crunchy drums of the opening 20 seconds, or from the softly cooed vocals up the the 1.20 mark, that an incredibly sugar-coated, bubblegum bright pop chorus would suddenly hit you. Bebe Panthere is the solo project of Effie Liu, backup singer for French Horn Rebellion, and now creator of playful but edgy pop songs like “Competition.”
