There’s not a shortage of good hip-hop coming out of the South right now. But while trap sounds and styles permeate the culture, there’s not much room left for thoughtful, introspective rappers. Just yesterday, Big K.R.I.T. snapped on “Mt. Olympus,” reacting to the way people perceive Southern rap, and today we get two young Southern rappers who offer something different from the norm.

21 is from Memphis, Tennessee, and he’s not on that trap wave. Words roll off his tongue like spoken word, and instead of over-indulgence and no-fucks-given, 21 raps like he cares. On his latest track, “Save My Soul,” he enlists fellow Memphis native Jon Waltz for support.

“It’s basically about that vice,” 21 says about the song. “We all have that one or many that we’ll give anything to have. Its about finding out how far you’re willing to go to get that one thing or those things that you desire so much. It’s about understanding who you are and what you stand for in the midst of those temptations. It’s produced by Nova.”
