The 25 Best Musical Performances on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon

In honor of Jimmy Fallon's run as Late Night host, Pigeons & Planes looks at the 25 best musical performances from the talk show.

By Elijah Watson

Though Jimmy Fallon has moved on to hosting The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, leaving his position as host of Late Night to Seth Meyers, he has left behind a legacy of eclectic musical guests.

So, in celebration of Fallon's recent move, we revisit the best performances on Late Night. Huge thanks Questlove, Jonathan Cohen, and Fallon for choosing such an incredible roster of performers, and long may you continue to do so on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

From Morrissey to Bon Iver and Kid Cudi to Lauryn Hill, here are the 25 best performances from Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

1.

2. Morrissey - "You Have Killed Me"

3. Living Colour - "Behind The Sun"

4. Slayer - "Hate Worldwide"

5. Bell Biv DeVoe - "Poison"

6. Bon Iver - "Holocene"

7. Kid Cudi - "Maniac"

8. M83 - "Midnight City"

9. Tame Impala - "Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind"

Date performed: August 12, 2011

This 2011 performance marked Tame Impala's first televised American performance. Even before Lonerism resulted in the group appearing at music festivals across the world and their music being placed in everything from Blackberry commercials to episodes of Girls, you could see from the performance that the band was nearing their come-up. From the melodic guitar parts to the head bobbing drums, Tame Impala's performance on Fallon made a stellar first impression on the show's viewers.

10. Drake ft. Sampha - "Too Much"

11. St. Vincent - "She Is Beyond Good and Evil (The Pop Group Cover)"

12. Grimes - "Genesis"

13. Ciara - "Body Party"

14. The xx - "Chained"

Date performed: October 26, 2012

This performance of "Chained" is so aesthetically simple, yet so alluring at the same time. The xx took their time with one of the bigger singles from their sophomore album, Coexist. The blue lighting that shone above the members embodied the feel that the band was trying to channel: sad, unyielding, and cold like ice. Few performers are capable of limiting audience interaction to stunned silence like this English collective, but it's this very quality that makes their performance so much more engaging.

15. Lykke Li - "Get Some"

Date performed: March 3, 2011

Looking like an extra in one of The Matrix movies, Lykke Li charges through this performance of "Get Some" with attitude. But let's be real: the star of this show is easily the tambourine. Like the cowbell on "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," the tambourine on "Get Some" is crucial. Would this performance still be great without the tambourine? Well, it's Lykke Li, so probably. Either way, magnetic performance.

20 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT LYKKE LI

16. Clipse - "Grindin'"

17. Wu-Tang Clan - "6 Directions of Boxing"

Date performed: October 22, 2012

"It is not easy to get these guys together in the same place at the same time," said Jimmy Fallon, as he introduced the Wu-Tang Clan. One could only imagine how difficult it was to organize this performance. But luckily, the end result was a successful one, with members of the Clan performing "6 Directions Of Boxing" from The Man With The Iron Fists soundtrack.

The performance's best moments were subtle. Seeing RZA smile as fellow Wu-Tang members do their verses, and all of them strutting around to the beat only to pause briefly to ad-lib along another member's verse were true moments for a hip-hop head. It might be hard to bring the Wu-Tang Clan together sometimes, but rest assured that they will always bring the ruckus.

18. James Blake - "The Wilhelm Scream"

19. Disclosure - "Latch"

20. Kanye West - "Bound 2"

21. Radiohead - "Give Up The Ghost"

22. Portishead - "Chase The Tear"

23. Lauryn Hill - "Doo Wop (That Thing)"

24. Frank Ocean - "Bad Religion"

25. Tyler, the Creator - "Sandwitches"

Date performed: February 16, 2011

Remember when we used to be afraid of Odd Future? Remember when we used to call them rap's Sex Pistols because they didn't care?

This performance came just before Tyler, the Creator's seemingly overnight success, back when he was wearing that distinctive green mask with the inverted cross markered on. Tyler has come a long way since then, but this was the first time when the world that existed outside of blogs and underground rap was introduced to the disturbingly brilliant mind of Tyler. And naturally, he put on a show. Conservative parents in Middle America were probably scared shitless until Tyler showed off his more playful side with this move:

27. Prince - "Screwdriver"

Date performed: March 1, 2013

It's Prince. He's so talented and universally revered that he could break your guitar and you would probably consider it an honor. And, of course, such was the case in his performance on Fallon, in which The Purple One broke the guitar of The Roots's "Captain" Kirk Douglas. Prince is a bonafide badass and can still shred to this day. Unfortunately, because Prince isn't the biggest fan of the internet, it's hard to conjure up video evidence, but know that at one point, his punchy riffs in this performance could spin you around like, well, a screwdriver.

It's unanimous: Prince gets the top spot for our best musical performances from Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.
