Alternative R&B, for want of a better term, is here to stay. This is something we should all be thankful for, as the majority of artists exploring the genre have at the very least attempted to keep things unique. SLK does this by finding a delightful middle-ground between a soft hum and a proud howl. On the Embody produced “Be,” her smoky voice glides over the misty synth lines and forlorn textures with ease, sounding like the bitter counter-point to Sampha. Refreshingly, SLK doesn’t focus her lyricism on debauchery either; something certain artists in the genre have seemingly been unable to move past.
