Michael Christmas and Alex Wiley make an entertaining duo: Self-deprecating, sharp-witted rappers unafraid to dip into off color punchlines and bouts of unpredictable melody (witness the gloriously tasteless refrain new single “Step Brothers”: “Girl, suck on me”) all while maintaining able, agile flows. “Step Brothers” isn’t profound, but it isn’t meant to be. Born of a few days spent in the studio after the duo played a show together in Boston, the new song from Christmas’ forthcoming Is This Art? mixtape channels the spirit of its namesake film to serve up an entertaining three minutes that reminds us how much fun rap can be when you stop taking yourself too seriously.
