Tinashe impressed towards the end of last year with the sultry R&B of her Black Water mixtape, which included the brilliantly produced, gorgeously restrained “Vulnerable,” a great song even with an annoying Travi$ Scott verse tacked on the end. Tinashe kicks of 2014 with another rapper in tow, this time SchoolBoy Q (check out his recent Reddit AMA here), who joins her on the DJ Mustard produced “2 On.”
With Mustard and his neck snapping production as the backbone, “2 On” sees the singer going for a club smash, which unfortunately feels a little hollow compared to the smoother production that featured on Black Water, which included beats from Ryan Hemsworth, Boi-1-da, and Tinashe herself. Collaborations with Mike WiLL Made It and Dev Hynes are on the way, so whichever direction she chooses, 2014 should be an interesting year for Tinashe.
