Take a trip down the Soundcloud wormhole and you’ll find any number of producers capable of clapping together cool textures and loose ideas that might pique interest at first listen but don’t hold attention in the long term. It’s a conundrum we deal with daily at P&P: So many cool sounds out there, but how many great songs?
Vancouver producer Rook Milo’s latest single “Outland” doesn’t quite cross the threshold from awesome texture to complete song, but it shows an ear for structure and an understanding of how to hook listeners (thanks to an excellently used, classic Eddie Kendricks sample) that bodes well for his prospects at separating himself from the Soundcloud heap. Clean, swirling, and soulful, “Outland” mixes the modern and nostalgic in the service of creating impeccable late night mood music.
