If nothing London Grammar did this year was enough to convince you of the British trio’s enormous potential, let their gorgeous cover of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” on Fearne Cotton’s BBC Radio 1 show be the thing that seals the deal. Where Miley’s nasally vocals and inconsistent range leave the Dr. Luke-produced ballad semi-hollow, Hannah Reid’s operatic voice transforms the song into a poignant, mournful meditation on love lost. And while Miley’s version picks up dramatically in the chorus, London Grammar leave it scaled back creating a powerful effect with minimalism which, in many ways, has been a sonic theme of 2013. Watch the performance above.
