Chairlift's Caroline Polachek Talks "BEYONCÉ" Collaboration "No Angel"

None

When Beyoncé dropped her record-breaking eponymous fifth studio album BEYONCÉ late last Thursday night, the no-warning release was only the first surprise. Then those that were lucid enough to parse through the album’s tracklist (it was past midnight) got another surprise in both a writing and production cred for Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek on the song “No Angel.” We knew Chairlift were working with her younger sister Solange on her upcoming album, but there was never any mention of a Beyoncé collaboration in the works as well.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Polachek explains that the hook-up actually derived from bandmate Patrick Wimberly who, at the time, was playing with Solange for her show at the MoMA’s Armory Party back in March. Apparently, Beyoncé casually requested a studio session with Chairlift. Shortly after, Polachek says she spent a week writing for the album but actually birthed the track that became “No Angel,” a pounding super bass-heavy song that sees Beyoncé singing predominately in a falsetto, while on tour in the UK and submitted it last minute.

And although the song’s inclusion in the album was an unexpected surprise even for Polachek, it’s been a welcome treat for her peers like Grimes and the song’s co-producer BOOTS:

Hear where Polachek’s inspiration for the song might’ve come from with her cover of Beyoncé’s “Party” from last year with Das Racist’s Kool A.D below.
