The most interesting thing about Mapei’s “Don’t Wait”—the song that will serve as her introduction to many—is the vocals. There’s a robotic effect to them, but the Swedish singer manages to maintain a soulful edge. The Kingdom remix takes away those vocal effects and uses a more organic sound. With a melody as catchy as “Don’t Wait,” that should yield a pretty straightforward, maybe too straightforward, pop song. But in place of the interesting vocal effect of the original, Kingdom has added a new element of interest: masterful, minimalist production that keeps the melody at a low and instead backs the song with stabs of bass, percussion, and synths for a jagged, crisp sound. This is not your basic pop song.
