From the mixed-up files of head-scratching collaborations comes this gorgeous Grizzly Bear rework, courtesy of Diplo. “Will Calls” is off the B-sides of Grizzly Bear’s “Shields.” The B-sides came to light just recently, continuing the band’s tradition of releasing songs that didn’t make the album’s final cut.
Diplo takes the spare, lumbering beauty of the original and puts his signature skittering synths to work, parsing Ed Droste’s melancholy into a thousand tiny slivers and putting them back together again as he sees fit. It’s a strange and beautiful union, one of those rare cases where the remix sounds very little like the original, succeeding in a wholly different genre while retaining the soul of the first take.
