Evian Christ, Gesaffelstein, Brodinski, and Arca suddenly became hot topics beyond their natural habitat of the dance and electronic music world with their surprise appearances on the production credits of Kanye West’s Yeezus album. As someone who was excited by Evian Christ’s brilliantly dark, rap-sample heavy debut tape (Kings and Them) for Tri Angle back when it dropped in early 2012, the fact that he ends 2013 having worked on one of its most important releases is great to witness.
It still remains to be seen, however, whether the “Kanye effect” will help any of these artists reach a larger audience in the longer term. Gesaffelstein’s excellent and impressively varied album Aleph didn’t seem to receive much coverage beyond the usual dance music press, even though some of its beats equal genuine crossover successes TNGHT in terms of both power and hip-hop influence (seriously, listen to “Hellifornia“), but if anything is going to make people sit up and pay attention to these guys, it’s making more great music. Evian Christ’s “Salt Carousel” is just that. It’s his hardest-hitting, most unhinged track yet, relying less on sampled rap vocals, and more on its wild, acid-drenched synth line.
