Since it first emerged in 2005, YouTube has quickly established itself as one of the most important platforms for music discovery. In honor of this, the site has announced that they will launch the first-ever YouTube Music Awards, which will celebrate the most popular artists and songs that were watched on the site over this past year. The event will take place at Pier 36 in New York on Sunday November 3, and will be live-streamed worldwide. Among this year’s performers are Arcade Fire, Lady Gaga and Eminem, while director Spike Jonze and actor Jason Schwartzman will share hosting duties.
“We’re setting out to create a night that’s all about making things and creativity in the spirit of everyone that uses YouTube,” said Jonze. “As well as giving out awards, we’ll be making live music videos. The whole night should feel like a YouTube video itself. We’re getting together a group of amazing artists and filmmakers to do this live — tune in to see what happens live.” Nominations will be announced on October 17 and winners will be decided based on what videos the public shares via social media.
