Boston rapper Michael Christmas‘s new single “Michael Cera” continues his quest to elevate regular guy rap with charm and deadpan humor.

Using the same sorts of sight gags as “Daily,” the video that first brought Christmas to our attention, “Michael Cera” takes average situations and sprinkles them with playful wit. Musically, Christmas pushes his style forward, keeping a wry, conversational tone on his verses, saving himself for the giddily unhinged chorus, on which Christmas co-opts a favorite lyrical technique of Lil B, chanting “I think I’m Michael Cera!” It’s a curious, amusing intersection of blog-era rap influences, twirling a few years of recent styles and ideas into a clever mix, breathing unexpected life into one of internet rap’s least exciting genres.
