When covering a song, a musician has two choices. They can either stay true to form and essentially replicate an original piece, or exercise a heightened level artistic creativity and apply a fresh spin to something familiar. Phosphorescent‘s take on “Ya Hey,” the popular marching hit off Vampire Weekend‘s latest album, Modern Vampires of the City, is a perfect example of the latter. Think Iron & Wine’s sleepy rework of “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service. Each took songs with inspired energy and correctly stripped them down to something more soothing and meditative. Give it a listen above.
