I’ve never been a big proponent of lo-fi music. I usually imagine how good the song could sound if it was just polished a bit. But every now and then, a song comes along and charms with its rough recording style. Mzwètwo (pronounced Mz-we-two), is an artist from New Zealand who just uploaded his first song to Soundcloud. It’s called “I’d Go Back On My Heart” and it is “inspired by how horribly stupid love makes us act.” The song sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom, not a recording studio. The levels are off, the vocals are distant, and the instrumentation is muffled, but it’s all the more endearing for it, and “I’d Go Back On My Heart” captures a moody recklessness that no amount of mastering or recording studio trickery could make much more effective.
