What Sam Smith is good at is emotive, powerful ballads. That’s uncontested. What you probably wouldn’t expect Sam Smith to be good at is covering a song like Arctic Monkeys’ “Do I Wanna Know?,” a gritty, sexually-charged, slithering piece of music. Smith takes the original and graces it with his vocal acrobatics as it’s backed by some raucous electric guitars and percussions for an arresting result. It’s certainly different from the original due to the differences between the voices of Sam Smith and that of Alex Turner, but that doesn’t make Smith’s rendition any less impressive.
