Premiere: Beaty Heart - "Lekka Freakout"

At times, “pop” music feels like it could be engineered solely from attitude and an ear for something unusually catchy. As Lorde has proven, you don’t need big-name-producer-polish to craft something that connects with people on a massive scale. A little quirk, good writing, and a break from the expected can go a long way.

That is not to predict that British psych-pop trio Beaty Heart’s “Lekka Freakout” will become a smash hit on par with “Royals,” but it is to say that the group’s new single conjures an infectious sense of fun, building an amusing, surrealist chorus atop its hazy, nod-inducing tropical rhythms. “Lekka Freakout” isn’t the sort of thing you’d expect to hear on Top 40 radio, but in a world as unpredictable as ours, it could be a commercial or viral video away from ubiquity–the sort of song that makes people stop and say “wait a minute, what was that?”
