Big Sean Talks Kendrick Lamar's Verse, Michelle Obama is Releasing a Hip-Hop Album

We see a lot of really random shit every week. Deciding what to post and what to ignore is a constant balancing act that requires much skill, judgment, and discretion. Sometimes it depends on how drunk we are or how trollish we're feeling. Instead of simply letting these things pass us by, we decided to keep track of them and gather them all together for this post, which we'll do weekly. These are the kinds of things P&P writers email each other like, "ROFL omg WOW." Welcome to the party.

2. Michelle Obama is releasing a hip-hop album... about nutrition...

Since President Obama took office, First Lady Michelle Obama has made childhood obesity, nutrition and healthy eating her top priorities. Now it seems this crusade has reached a new level, because Mrs. Obama is releasing a hip-hop album... about diet and exercise. No, this is not a joke and no, it unfortunately doesn't include ANY Gucci Mane covers. It does include guest features from the likes of Reverend Run of Run DMC, Travis Barker, Jordin Sparks, Ashanti (hell yea girl, I see you), and Dr. Oz. Damn, she got Dr. Oz on this?! Shit is gonna be BANGING.

4. Before you start writing your own "Control" response, let's consult this flowchart

By now you're definitely aware of Kendrick's "verse heard 'round the world." Throughout the week, we've seen a steady stream of responses, some from rappers we expected and some from those we didn't (why hello, Lupe). And with bars as passionate as Kendrick's, it's easy to see how some could get caught up in the whirlwind and want to jump in the middle of the action. Hell, you yourself might even feel the need to get on the mic. BUT HOLD ON THERE. Before you do, Buzzfeed has made this chart in order for you to really see if that's necessary. So take a breath, consult the graph and basically—unless your name is Justin Bieber—proceed to the studio.

6. One time, Jay Z wrote The Doors' John Densmore a letter explaining hip-hop

On Jay Z's 2001 The Blueprint LP, the rapper used a sample from The Doors' "Five to One." When the band's drummer John Densmore caught wind of this, he wasn't mad or happy; instead he was just straight up confused, stating he didn't "get the point of hip-hop." Jay Z heard this and in an effort to educate, wrote a letter to Densmore explaining hip-hop. In the note, Jay stated, "Hey, we're fighting the authority just like you guys did back then," and included a Def Jam t-shirt in the package.

Now, Densmore can play this off as, "Oh, I was really touched at Jay's gesture and impressed by his articulate letter so I dropped my criticisms and gave hip-hop a chance," but you and I both know it was that t-shirt that really won him over. I don't care if it had a big #1 VANILLA ICE FAN embroidered on it, a free shirt is a free shirt and when you get anything for free, you celebrate that. I mean, have you seen the audience when Oprah gives does her "Favorite Things" episodes? They could get a bathrobe made out of straw and those women still go nuts. Free stuff is powerful. End of story.

8. Peter Gabriel is one of Disclosure's favorite songwriters

Disclosure have taken the music world by storm with the release of their excellent debut album, Settle. In their cover interview for NME, the duo shared who their top five favorite songwriters are and making the list are a few surprises. One of them being Peter Gabriel.

Howard: Everything that he's done has been so innovative. He's such a clever songwriter, and very, very musical - not just in his solo career, but the stuff he did with Genesis, too. I'm a massive fan of those albums through my dad, which is how we got into him in the first place. When we were growing up, before we started this project, all we were interested in was getting better at our instruments, and he writes with such interesting chords that I'd hear it and try to learn how to play it.

Guy: Like Howard said, our dad is really into Genesis, which is how we got into Peter Gabriel in the first place. He was always being played in our house when we were growing up - I guess he's just got one of those voices that sound like a childhood memory. We've even got a tapestry our mum made of the cover of [Genesis' 1976 album] 'A Trick of the Tail' hanging up on the wall in our studio.

Look guys, Peter Gabriel is awesome, clearly. But how is this moment from Say Anything not the reason to love the man? Without him, Lloyd Dobler would still just be that guy who got a lousy pen when he confessed his love for Diane Court. So on behalf of Guy, Howard, Lloyd, everyone with a boombox, thank you Peter Gabriel.

10. Big Sean discusses Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse

Big Sean sat down with Vibe after the release of "Control" to discuss Kendrick Lamar's verse and it's monumental impact. He responded:

But really, he said:

I knew what it was for the culture of hip-hop. You see how excited people are, and I wanted to do that for music—make that play happen. It gave me like the feeling of how hip-hop was. How it used to be. When I heard [Kendrick's] verse I wasn't about to go back and change my verse—that’s cheating. That ain't the way of an O.G. That ain't how G’s move. I wanted to [release the song] for the culture of hip-hop as opposed to myself.

12. Someone's making a lot of money off "Acid Rap" and it's not Chance The Rapper

Chance The Rapper's excellent Acid Rap reached #63 on the Billboard's Hip-Hop/R&B albums last week. Which normally would be cause to celebrate except the record shouldn't be on the chart at all-it's a free download. According to Billboard, someone has been selling Acid Rap illegally on iTunes and Amazon and raking in all the profits, without any being funneled to Chance himself. Which is crazy! Luckily, Chance's management is now aware of the situation and is taking legal action to stop any further sales. So if you haven't yet and want to cop Chance's mixtape, just download it FOR FREE on his website. And to everyone who paid for a free album:

14. Daft Punk and Milla Jovovich did a high-fashion photoshoot together

So here's a weird thing. Daft Punk and model/actress Milla Jovovich recently teamed up for a new photo spread for CR Fashion Book. The piece, which is entitled "Digital Love," is inspired by Daft Punk's huge success with Random Access Memories.

The weird part isn't that Daft Punk did a photoshoot for a fashion magazine; if you remember, they are set to appear in Vogue's August 2013 issue. They are probably like top 3 most stylish robots. The weird part is how everyone is saying Milla is best known for her Resident Evil and The Fifth Element roles. Uh guys, does no one want to acknowledge she played the stoner to end all stoners in Dazed & Confused?! You just don't teach that kind of talent, and I don't know, I think it just deserves some kudos is all.

16. Watch Drake, J. Cole, and Big Sean respond to Kendrick's "Control" verse

In the sea of memes, response verses and spoofs (like this Hitler one) that emerged in the wake of Kendrick Lamar's verse on "Control," there is probably none funnier than this video. The clip takes interview segments of Drake, J. Cole, and Big Sean and adds a voice dub over it to make it seem like they're speaking about K.Dot's lines. Even if you're like, "Ugh, I'd rather be in a jacuzzi with The Situation before I hear one more joke about Kendrick" just do yourself a favor and make room for one more. You don't even have to watch the whole thing, just Big Sean's part. Great job Internet!

18. Hear Toro Y Moi cover a song by Ricky Gervais' character on The Office

For those who have seen the U.K. version of The Office, you're probably familiar with Ricky Gervais' David Brent and his guitar tutorials series. Under this guise, Gervais released "Slough," a song dedicated to the town The Office takes place in. Toro Y Moi heard this and decided to cover it, writing on his Soundcloud: "dear ricky, hope you like this cover. peace, chaz."

Whoa, not bad Chaz! You're like a regular Beyoncé. Hey Michael Scott, what do you think?

21. Out of anything, Gunplay would bring his criminal record to show and tell

Gunplay, by all accounts, is truly a complex individual. He believes in aliens and doesn't get the idea of Santa or Jesus. He has one of the most unique perspectives on life that you'll find in music today. Which made him the perfect guest for Complex's Complex Individual web TV series.

He answered a few questions like what was the first album he ever bought, what his favorite swear word is, his most expensive purchase and who the most interesting person is he's ever met (spoiler alert: it's his label boss Rick Ross, who Gunplay says "thinks with both sides of his brain"). But if there's ANYTHING to take away from this interview, is that when faced with what to bring for Show-and-Tell, Gunplay would bring his criminal record. Everyone should just call it a damn day, because Gunplay just won at life for like the next 9.76 million years.
