Australia’s Ta-ku has been killing it lately. His remixes and edits are as impressive as they are diverse, and now he drops an album full of soulful retro-futuristic hip-hop soundscapes that we didn’t even see coming. As far as producers go, not many can compete with the versatility of Ta-ku, but even better: not many can compete with his skill. Whether it’s dusty, Dilla-esque beats like “Boom” from the new DOWHATYOULOVE album or his modern, lush remix of “Love & Pain,” he’s nailing the sounds and styles with an ear for melody, masterful mixing and sonic quality, and the restraint to make it all come together perfectly.
