Dos And Don'ts of Social Media: A Guide For Musicians

It is so easy to get excited about following all your favorite artists on Twitter/Instagram/Facebook/Vine. You're friends now, right?! You can see what they're thinking, talk directly to them, and get exclusive access to all the sweet stuff rock stars do. And for the most part, that's true. There are some musicians who are awesome at social media—they get how and when to use it, and do so effectively. And then there are some who find it necessary to #hashtag #every #word, start Twitter feuds, or post pictures that are just TMI. In an effort to help, we've outlined some basic do's and don'ts for new and veteran musicians alike, to help guide them through the scary and sometimes confusing world of social media. #TakeNotes.

2. DO: Get personal

3. DON'T: Be hateful

4. DO: Provide VIP treatment

5. DON'T: Only tweet promo content

6. DO: Share new material

7. DON'T: Go on a retweeting spree

8. DO: Make friends

9. DON'T: Overshare

10. DO: Engage with/acknowledge your fans

11. DON'T: Take yourself too seriously

12. DO: Help promote other artists

13. DON'T: Start a twitter feud

Fun for us? Yes. Fodder for tabloids? Absolutely. Good for your career? Absolutely not. I understand that this world of reality TV catfights and sensationalism seems to promote these outbursts, but there's a difference: the "Real Housewives" ratings go up when a hair weave gets pulled. Your music won't get more listens if you call someone a bitch on Twitter. You'll just be that musician who called someone a bitch on Twitter.

15. DO: Involve yourself with all social media outlets

Trans-media integration is a sure sign of an account run right. Sure, having a solid Facebook or Instagram is important, but staying tuned into what's new on the social media front is key to making sure you're not only reaching maximum exposure, but also staying relevant. Can you imagine when Justin Timberlake made his long-awaited comeback earlier this year and he was like "Hey guys check out my brand new single with Jay-Z on Myspace?" Like come on bro, give us some vines, you know?

17. DON'T: Get crazy with the hashtags

18. DO: Link to your "real" pages

At the end of the day, we know we can only find out so much about a musician by stalking their Twitter. Linking to a website/soundcloud/etc let's people get to the next level and also discover even more about you. Plus, the worst thing you could realize is that you've been "liking" posts by a fake Soulja Boy and missing out on gems like this:
