After the gloomy enchantment of introductory track “Dark Star,” singer Jaymes Young returns with surprisingly deceptively buoyant new single “Wondering.”
Though its lyrical content remains squarely in the lustful, longing mode that “Dark Star” intriguing, its arrangement is a bit sunnier, driven by echoey piano, loose, swung drums, and a brief, burning guitar solo bookend. It feels of a piece with Mikky Ekko‘s “Pull Me Down,” a slice of soulfully downtempo pop that sounds like it will live just as well on stage as it will trickling from laptop speakers. A promising second step.
