If Mazzy Star formed in 2013, they might sound something like Badlands. That’s them in the artwork above, and “Sleeping Beauty” is their first offering to the world—and it’s a great introduction. It’s a dreamy song that marches in the clouds, guided by a breathy voice and layers of ethereal guitar work and moody production that sets the tone while letting the vocals take the spotlight. Far from the mushy jumble of mess that is so often associated with “dreamy” in the indie world, “Sleeping Beauty” is a gorgeous and balanced piece of pop.
