Broken Social Scene is one of those bands that will be just as well-known for what they produced together as what they did apart. The group helped spawn the successful solo careers of Feist, Stars’ Torquil Campbell and Metric frontwoman Emily Haines before they announced their indefinite hiatus in late 2011. Today though, the band has reunited to release a single off their compilation of rarities, titled Arts & Crafts: 2003-2013 and in doing so, have reminded us how mesmerizing they can be together. “Deathcock” is the first song the band recorded and they’ve revamped it for their upcoming LP. It’s a sprawling 7 minute production complete with expertly layered instrumentation that teeters between being sublimely subtle and overwhelming powerful.
