20 Current Songs Reviewed By Our Moms

When we're young, our mothers usually play a large role in shaping our musical taste. As little human beings we listen to whatever's around us and soak it all up before we can even make up our own minds. At some point we start deciding what's cool for ourselves, and by middle school we're usually listening to whatever our moms hate. But eventually, the roles get reversed and we start introducing our moms to new sounds. In an attempt to keep our moms up to date on new music, we had them listen to 20 current tracks and tell us what they think.

Here are 20 songs reviewed by our mothers. We love you, moms.

1.

2. Chronik - "Man In The Boot"

Constant Gardner's Mum

Having reluctantly put this track on to play for a second time, in order to give it a fair chance, I’m afraid I soon turned it off again. I have no idea what it was about, as I could not understand the words or the pictures. The overall effect was aggressive and menacing, and all I felt was pity for these big boys who need to be taken out of their environment and given a good home! The nice touch at the end was that somebody else also knows they are human. Verdict : 1 out of 10. Do people listen to this for pleasure?

3. Drake - "Girls Love Beyonce"

Jon Tanners' Mom

Evocative melody and simple choral/soft percussion background sets this song apart from what I associate with typical Rap. Drake is a formidable rapper and has a beautiful voice. This was an artist whose work I found sophisticated. I can imagine that this might be a much talked about and lasting song.

4. Safe - " Black Satin Living Room"

Confusion's Mom

I thought I would like it and wanted to like it but couldn't quite enjoy it. Yeah it's intense but it didn't lead anywhere. Liked the voice and the music was ok but the lyrics didn't come together for me.

5. Diplo - "Express Yourself"

Joyce's Mum

Does moving your butt mean that you are expressing yourself? Why are they shaking their butts? The music makes me dizzy. It is just noise, so I don't think I like it. No, I don't like it. I like songs that are quiet. Have you heard "Good Time"? I like that song.

6. Bipolar Sunshine - "Fire"

Jon Tanners' Mom

"Fire" is quite beautiful. The guitar and the evocative voice of the artist are haunting and sad. Melodically timeless, this song speaks to one's soul. I could listen to this song over and over--especially when I'm sad.

7. TNGHT - "Acrylics"

Harmonicait's Mom

Starts out with a music box sounding like the soundtrack to a low budget horror film and quickly changes to an electronic buzz and beat with progressive chord changes that build to a crescendo that falls and begins again with the music box sound. Very interesting. Definitely has kind of a futuristic, apocalyptic feel.

8. Grimes - "Oblivion"

Katie K's Mom

Wow, this is refreshingly different; I've never heard anything like this. The mixture of this electronic beat with her pretty high-pitched voice creates a sound that's completely unique. Plus she's adorable but in a really cool, funky way. The music world could use more female artists like her.

9. Chinx Drugz - "I'm A Cokeboy"

Jon Tanners' Mom

Now this piece of "high art" has good rapping-catchy beat and shocking racist lyrics-not to mention disdain for everything and everyone from Jews to pimps to doctors-I guess there is intended humor and irony in the lyrics. I will never play this for my grandchildren!

10. Daft Punk ft. Pharrell - "Get Lucky"

Constant Gardner's Mum

Upbeat music for a long car journey. Bright, cheerful, a bit repetitive, but good for when you’re doing something else. And, by the end of the journey, you might have worked out the lyrics – it can’t really be “We’re up on leg to get lucky; she’s up on leg ….. ” Verdict : 5 out of 10. OK.

11. Baauer - "Harlem Shake"

Joyce's Mum

I heard this song on my Facebook, but "Harlem Shake" is weird. It is upbeat, so if I were in a good mood, I could dance to it. I like the animal sounds, but it's not my cup of tea.

12. The Knife - "Tooth For An Eye"

Constant Gardner's Mum

Listening with closed eyes leaves you with images of exotic locations, maybe palm fringed beaches or snow capped mountains (that’s the pan pipes), so the setting of the video in a gym came as a total surprise. Mind you, if I knew what the very attractive singer was saying I might have had a clue – after two repeats I had still only got three words: ‘desire’, ‘nice’ and ‘fire’. But put the two together, it was interesting – the music, which was slow to develop, being counter balanced by some interesting video. Verdict: 4 out of 10. Potential not quite reached.

13. A$AP Rocky ft. 2 Chainz, Drake and Kendrick Lamar - "F**kin Problems"

Confusion's Mom

Yup - you guessed it: Hated the video. Hated the refrain. Hated the message. Hated the misogynistic overtones. Didn't really like anything about it at all.

14. James Blake - "Retrograde"

Harmonicait's Mom

Two hauntingly beautiful melodies intertwine in this song. The longing expressed in the lyrics is well conveyed musically.

15. DJ Khaled, Drake, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross - "No New Friends"

Katie K's Mom

I loved this song. I had to restart it a few times because I liked Drake's chorus so much. It's catchy and has a beat that you want to hear over and over. I feel like this "no new friends" phrase will definitely be a new mantra people will be using.

16. Drake - "Started From The Bottom"

Joyce's Mum

What does he mean by "started from the bottom"? The music itself is not bad. I like the beat. Lyrics are easy to remember because of the repetitive words, and overall it is pretty good except for the “f” words (because I’m a traditional Asian mom). But why is he grabbing his private parts [in the video]? Is that what "started form the bottom" means? Who is he?

Note: I explained to my mother what "started from the bottom" meant after, and this was her response: "so he started poor, is that what he means? So why is he pointing at his... how did he become so rich, then?"

Because he's a rapper now, Mum. Obv.

17. Dirty Projectors - "Offspring are Blank"

Harmonicait's Mom

Starts with nice harmonies in a slightly minor key. Makes some unusual choices as to where the melody goes. Lyrically I think they are trying too hard to be “ significant."

18. Lil B - "I Love You"

Katie K's Mom

Well this is a natural habitat for him. It's obvious he just connects with animals and I can appreciate that. It's very true to him, at least he's not surrounded by girls in bikinis or rolling around in piles of money. The lyrics are a little ridiculous though, it sounds like a 3rd grader's Mother's Day card - I actually think your brother did write this to me at some point in elementary school. I don't know, this is a nice video but he's so emotional about everything! He's just way too based in this one.

19. Chance the Rapper - "Juice"

Confusion's Mom

Interesting video—familiar setting and great "on location" appropriate setting for the song (uh, for the rap). He captured my attention and was a high-energy rapper (not singer, right?). Animated and involved. Wonderful that he shouted out to P&P and obviously he has good taste!

20. Bitches is Crazy - "Yo Soy Widdit"

Jon Tanners' Mom

Hearing the title "Yo Soy Widdit" repeated many times, over the driving, hard hitting beat was rather hypnotic, yet, somewhat annoying. I was grateful not to be able to understand the most of lyrics--the words I did recognize were predictably vulgar. One or two of the rhymes seemed clever. I was happy to hear the "bitches" get a chance to sing. I will not be playing this song at my next dinner party.

21. Frank Ocean ft. Earl Sweatshirt - "Super Rich Kids"

Harmonicait's Mom

I really liked this combination of slow rap with a melodic throwback to mowtown kind of sound. Loved the line “ too many white lies, too many white lines."
