Video: The Rubens - "Lay It Down"

The Rubens have what it takes to be big. Good looking dudes? Check. Australian accents? Check. A lead singer with a voice that sounds like Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and Jeff Buckley had a love child? Motherfucking check. The Australian quartet, made up of three brothers (Sam, Elliot, and Zaac Margin) and one good friend (Scott Baldwin) formed in 2011. Since then they have consistently climbed the radar ladder, first in Australia and now making their way to the U.S. with a slot on the highly coveted Governors Ball lineup.

“Lay It Down,” the band’s latest single, just gets it right. The video, featuring Australian actress Abbie Cornish, is drenched in soul. Literally. They spend the entirety of the video performing while buckets of water rain down on them and lead Singer Sam Margin has a wise-beyond-his-years vibe that cuts deeper with each watch/listen. The lyrics are simple—he got fucked over and he doesn’t want to have to accept it was her that did it. We’ve all been there. And now this song makes being there a little more bearable.
