Video Premiere: K.Flay - "The Cops"

There’s something appealing about vulnerability. Music is art and art is expression, but so much of the time it ends up being an act that fails to live because it lacks humanity. Being vulnerable can go terribly wrong—it leaves you open to criticism on a personal level, often times yields corny material meant for a diary, and can make you look whiny if you don’t keep it in check.

For K.Flay, vulnerability seems to come naturally, and instead of making “The Cops” feel corny, it makes the song feel like an honest one. Veering away from the typical hip-hop angle, “The Cops” is more of a pop song with a delivery moping along both sides of that line between rapping and singing.

Kristine came up with the concept and co-directed this video, and here’s what she says about it: “The cops is a song about loneliness and vulnerability, about cooking dinner for someone who never shows up. I wanted the video to be a bit pathetic, since that’s what unrequited love really is. All of the props I stole from my friends. And I drank real beer.”
