10 Awesome Remixes of Hit Songs From the '90s

By Rosa Barney

The '90s brought us many things to be thankful for: Power Rangers, light-up sneakers, Friends, Furbys, Capri Suns, and the list goes on. Though there was a lot of great music that hit the airwaves from 1990 to 1999, it never hurts to put a modern spin on beloved classics. What happens when '90s pop and R&B crash head on into electronic, trap, and the imaginations of forward-thinking producers? Something surprisingly magical. We compiled a list of '90s staples to bring your nostalgic playlists into the present day.

2. "Sock It 2 Me (Kaytranada Remix)"

Original Artist: Missy Elliott

Missy Elliott's "Sock It 2 Me," which was originally released in 1997 received an upgrade from Montreal producer Kaytranada. While Missy’s vocals remain virtually untouched, Kaytranada totally changes the surrounding elements created on the distinctive Timbaland version.

3. "California Love (Rusko Remix)"

Original Artist: Tupac

Well known English dubstep producer Rusko decided to pay homage to Tupac and put his spin on California Love, an American classic. As a strong force in the dubstep community it was only fitting that if anyone was going to introduce wompy influences to this track it would be him. It was definitely a risk, but it's one that he should be proud of.

4. "If Your Girl Only Knew (Drunkmaster Flex & eSenTRiK Remix)"

Original Artist: Aaliyah

Aaliyah played a big role in defining 90's R&B and for some, the countless remixes help give her songs new life. This remix comes from Benzi's Get Right Radio 2012 Edition mixtape; the uptempo moombahton remix of the R&B classic turns it into danceable track that you can't help but groove to.

5. "Rumpshaker (J-Lah Remix)"

Original Artist: WRECKX-N-EFFECT

Toronto-based DJ and producer J-Lah put his spin on this well known Wreckx-n-Effect track. The original was produced by the father of the New Jack Swing genre Teddy Riley, who later became a de facto member of the group. J-lah kept the track true to its roots, unlike other "remixes," while still adding major trap elements to the song.

6. "Unpretty (Follow Me Remix)"

Original Artist: TLC

There was a point in every girl's life when this song was the anthem. Whether it was aimed at the mean girls at school or the boy that made her feel like an ugly duckling—TLC made it all OK. Follow Me have taken this track and made it fit for a swanky lounge and almost make you forget how insecure the lyrics really are.

7. "Jump Around (Pete Rock Remix)"

Original Artist: House of Pain

The list wouldn't be complete without this Pete Rock/House of Pain classic. This '90s anthem, which still goes hard today, was originally released in 1993 and rose to the number three position on the charts before Pete Rock hopped on. This is one of those rare instances when the remix is almost as well known as the original, and for good reason.

8. "Say My Name (Yum Yum Trap Remix)"

Original Artist: Destiny's Child

We couldn't make a list of '90s remixes without including at least one Destiny's Child track. This time Queen B and her support team get the trap treatment  from Yum Yum. Do you hear another familiar track coming through? That would be snippets of SBTRKT’s "Wildfire"—some would venture to call this a mashup, but that wouldn't do this justice.

9. "Gettin Jiggy Wit It (Viceroy Remix)"

Original Artist: Will Smith

Viceroy have created a slew of remixes of '90s hits, but one of their best is this remix of Will Smith's 1998 summer anthem "Gettin Jiggy Wit It." Viceroy have updated the track by replacing the notable '90s vibe with their smoothed out synths. The na-na-na-na-na-na-na's are still there though, this time courtesy of frequent Viceroy collaborator Chela.

10. "No Diggity (Them Lost Boys Remix)"

Original Artist: BLACKstreet

Them Lost Boys have found there way to BLACKstreet and created a fat trap track out of the smooth 90's classic No Diggity. The version below is a sample, to hear the full track you will have to grab the download from their Soundcloud page.

11. "Wonderwall (Questions Remix)"

Original Artist: Oasis

"Wonderwall" is one of the most recognizable tracks from the '90s—it graced countless movie soundtracks, hundreds of thousands of hand recorded mixtapes, and millions of AIM away messages. Its fame and status as a '90s playlist staple means that there are quite a few remixes out there but this Questions version keeps the classic Brit Pop vocals in their true form while completely reworking the tune; a compromise that will keep the purists happy and the new music fiends satisfied.
