This is the New York duo’s first full-length release since signing with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, and while sometimes the up-and-coming New York rap crews get lumped together, The Underachievers are out to set themselves apart. A competitive environment can spark more determination to stand out, and in the case of these guys, it’s working. With some familiar grimy East Coast vibes (see: “New New York”) and updated styles that reflect the creativity of a hip-hop act coming up in strange and exciting times of post-regionalism and increased experimentation, The Underachievers are worth paying attention to.
