Only Real - "Blood Carpet"

1.

It’s difficult to write about Only Real and feel like you’re properly encapsulating the spirit of the young West Londoner’s music. At once nostalgic–reminiscent of numerous touchstones–and original in its particular brand of gumbo, Only Real makes music sunny surf-rock aesthetics, melodic (and surprisingly intricately written) raps, and a comfortable coat of fuzz and reverb. The end result feels trendy without baiting, style as opposed to fashion. An interview with Dazed Digital points to the curious youngster’s genuineness:

DD: Will you make a conscious effort to maintain your lo-fi aesthetic if the chance arises to work in a big studio?

Only Real:
I didn’t even think I had a lo-fi aesthetic until people told me I did. It’s just that the quality of my music is inevitably gonna be like that when you have my raggedy set up and no real understanding of the software you use on a daily basis.
